Rūpa Gosvāmī About Eligibility for Bhakti (Vaidhī and Rāgānugā)

Translation Sanskrit to Bengali: Ananta Dāsa Bābājī

Eligibility for Vaidhī-Bhakti: Faith (śraddha)

yaḥ kenāpyati bhāgyena jāta śraddho’sya sevane

nātisakto na vairāgya bhāgasyām adhikāryasau

(Bhakti Rasāmṛta Sindhu 1.2.14)

"When, by a stroke of inconceivable luck, a person develops faith and liking for serving Kṛṣṇa (bhakti-mārga) due to having associated with great saints and so forth, but has not yet attained firm attachment to the Lord and is only slightly averse to bodily attachments – such a person is eligible for sādhana-bhakti."

Eligibility for Rāgānugā-Bhakti: Greed (lobha)

rāgātmikaika niṣṭhā ye vrajavāsi janādayaḥ

teṣāṁ bhāvāptaye lubdho bhaved atrādhikāravān

(Bhakti Rasāmṛta Sindhu 1.2.291)

"A person, who is greedy after the unalloyed, ecstatic rāgātmikā-bhakti that the Vrajavāsīs have for Kṛṣṇa, is eligible for rāgānugā-bhakti."

Symptoms of the Appearance of Greed (lobha)

tat tad bhāvādi mādhurye śrute dhīr yad apekṣate

nātra śāstraṁ na yuktiṁ ca tal lobhotpatti lakṣaṇam

(Bhakti Rasāmṛta Sindhu 1.2.292)

“When the heart yearns for the sweetness of the mutual feelings of Śrī Kṛṣṇa and His eternal associates in Vraja, and one is not dependent on scriptural injunctions or logical arguments, this is said to be the symptom of the appearance of greed.”

A pintura na capa é de Sri Rupa, que foi um seguidor de Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Ele foi um devoto rasika muito elevado e o Rei de todos os poetas.

Aqui ele é visto numa postura de humildade numa conversa com o Imperador Akbar. Ele foi registrado neste humor há aproximadamente 500 anos pelo artista do Imperador. Na parte interior de sua coxa direita vemos ‘Baba Rupa’ rabiscado em persa. Como o tempo cobrou seu preço na pintura, ela necessitou de um leve retoque. O original está muito cuidadosamente guardado no Sri Radhakund.

Original 500 years old painting of Rupa Gosvami by Emperor Akbar's Artist

The picture on the cover is that of Sri Rupa, who was a follower of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. He was a topmost rasika devotee and the King of all poets.

Here he is seen in a humble posture in conversation with Emperor Akbar. He was captured in this mood about 500 years ago by the Emperor’s artist. On his inner right thigh we see ‘Baba Rupa’ scrawled in Persian. Since time had taken its toll on the picture, it required a brief retouch. The original is mostly carefully stored in Sri Radhakund.
